As he worked toward his medical goals, Florida native Gary Cantor attended the University of Florida for his undergraduate education. There, he studied biology, earning a Bachelor of Science in 2012. He also used this opportunity to undertake an internship in San Francisco, California with Genentech to fully immerse himself within his genetics study goals. At Genentech for four months, Cantor worked in the organization’s translational oncology department, specifically helping the team on a treatment for triple negative breast cancer. This intense research opportunity was invaluable and immensely educational for Gary Cantor as he returned to the University of Florida and even as he moved on with his studies in the PhD program at UNC in the Durham, N.C. area.
